Teething in Babies: Symptoms & Treatment

Stephanie Martin

All babies are different when it comes to teething but your little one will probably get their first tooth before they turn 1 year old. Check the symptoms so you will know what to expect when your baby starts to show signs that a tooth is on its way and find the best treatment to relieve sore and sensitive gums.

When do babies start teething?

Babies can be born with their first teeth (also known as natal teeth) but this is relatively rare.

Some babies start teething before they are 4 months old while others after they are 12 months old. It is common for babies to start teething around 6 months old.

Teething Symptoms

Baby teeth can sometimes come through without causing any discomfort. But others may experience pain that before a tooth comes through. You may notice the following signs:

  • Your baby is dribbling more than usual which can also cause a rash around baby’s mouth, chin and chest
  • Sore gums and red where a tooth is coming through
  • Flushed cheeks
  • They are biting and chewing on anything and everything
  • Feeling grumpy and more irritable than usual
  • They are rubbing their ear
  • Loss of appetite

A mildly-raised temperature could also be a sign but it should not be over 38°C.
