  • Fatigue: Pregnancy hormones can make you feel more tired than usual, especially in the first trimester. Your body is working hard to support the growing baby, which can leave you feeling drained.
  • Breast Changes: Your breasts might become more sensitive and swollen early in pregnancy. This happens because of changes in hormones, getting you ready for breastfeeding.
  • Frequent Urination: You might find yourself needing to pee more often, thanks to hormonal changes and the growing uterus pressing on your bladder.
  • Food Cravings and Aversions: Hormonal changes can make you crave certain foods or have strong aversions to others. These cravings and dislikes are normal and can vary from person to person.

What to Do If You Think You're Pregnant?

If you think you might be pregnant, here's what you can do:

  • Take a Pregnancy Test: Use a home pregnancy test to check for the pregnancy hormone hCG in your urine. Follow the instructions carefully, ideally using your first urine in the morning for the most accurate results.
  • Schedule a Prenatal Appointment: Regardless of the test result, make an appointment with your healthcare provider. They'll confirm the pregnancy and provide guidance on staying healthy during pregnancy.
  • Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins: Begin taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid to support your baby's development. These vitamins are essential, especially early in pregnancy.
  • Make Lifestyle Adjustments: Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly (with your doctor's approval), avoid alcohol and tobacco, and get plenty of rest.
  • Seek Emotional Support: Pregnancy can bring up a range of emotions. Talk to your partner, family, friends, or a counsellor for support.

Pregnancy Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

While many pregnancy symptoms are normal, some need immediate medical attention:

  • Vaginal Bleeding: Heavy bleeding or bleeding with severe abdominal pain could be a sign of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
  • Severe Nausea and Vomiting: If you can't keep fluids down or feel dehydrated, it could be a sign of a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, which needs medical treatment.
  • Severe Abdominal Pain: Intense or persistent abdominal pain could be a sign of serious complications like ectopic pregnancy or preterm labor.
  • Decreased Fetal Movement: If you notice a significant decrease in your baby's movements, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Signs of Preterm Labor: Regular contractions, abdominal cramping, pelvic pressure, or a sudden rush of fluid could indicate preterm labor, which needs immediate medical attention.
